Is it more challenging to operate PTZ cameras than traditional camcorders? To address this, Datavideo interviewed Eviana Vergara, a remote camera operator who flawlessly operated cameras at the 2016 NAMM music concert. At the NAMM expo, she used the Datavideo RMC-180 camera controller to control four Datavideo PTC-150 HD/SD pan-tilt-zoom cameras simultaneously.
I volunteered to shoot at the NAMM expo, and Datavideo's team provided equipment assistance behind the scenes. Before this, I operated cameras at live events and filmed for the California World Cup softball this summer.
At the NAMM expo, I had a completely different experience. Instead of controlling a single camera at a fixed point and communicating with the director through headphones, I could simultaneously control four cameras. Each camera was placed in a different position to capture the best angles of the band's performance.
After observing some staff, I gradually grasped the essentials of using the RMC-180 camera controller. It does take some time to get used to, but after a few attempts, my familiarity with all the buttons and functions quickly increased.
Working in the same space as the director provides immediate, clear feedback without the noisy interference of live music. Additionally, the RMC-180 controller has various functions, and my favorite is the presets. Before the concert, I set the cameras at specific angles and saved them as presets so that when the show started, I could quickly return the cameras to their default shooting positions when needed. It is very helpful, especially with larger orchestras and solo performances where we must adjust the angles frequently.
No stress at all! Sometimes, between performances of two bands, I would adjust camera angles and then return backstage to continue operating. Overall, I'm happy to help and gain relevant experience. Learning and participating in various positions and roles for multi-camera shooting in live events is a memorable experience. As part of this program, I feel honored and have much fun.
